One of the first steps in implementing electronic medical records is to find a system that supports all the needs of a particular practice. Is it time for you to measure the effectiveness of your training programs? If you're not sure where to start, these Top Ten Training Metrics can help.

Measuring the effectiveness of training is a very difficult task, for stakeholders, training departments and end users. If you are a training manager or company stakeholder looking for ways to measure the effectiveness of your programs, these ten metrics are a great place to start.

One: Increased retention. Most Human Resources departments measure the rate of retention in all or various jobs. Many times, the front line, high turnover jobs are the ones that receive the most attention. If newly trained employees feel ill-equipped for the job, they are more likely to leave within their first 90 days. When you measure training success this way, higher retention points to a successful training program.

Top 10 Training Metrics

Two: Increased sales. Many organizations can track efficiency based on sales. If training is heavily geared toward a sales or customer service force, an effective program will eventually increase sales numbers. You can also measure product knowledge training as part of a sales number - poorly educated sales people usually do not make the sale. Dollar figures and unit sales make good metrics, but be sure to balance any metric with other factors that can influence sales numbers.

Three: Increased operational efficiency. In highly regulated or production-oriented businesses, managers look for more efficiency, which raises the bottom line. If your training programs teach skills, look to management's efficiency metrics, as a baseline, before and after the training intervention. If you are building a new program or product, look at the efficiency numbers to obtain direction on training course content.

Four: Customer service results. Any organization can link training to customer service, which can be both internal and external. Customer service is also one of the easier place to start: one well-written survey can identify a host of customer related issues that can be addressed by training programs. Remember that training may not be the only solution to those issues. If your organization already has a customer survey in place, use those metrics to cross check your programs. When your programs impact the survey items, you can correlate an increase in customer satisfaction back to training.

Five: Company-defined scorecards. Training outsourcers tend to use client-defined criteria to determine training effectiveness. If your organization has a wide variety of possible measurements, sit down with management, and stakeholders, to create a custom scorecard based on expectations and the training programs that need to be in place.

Six: Cost of training. This is an internal training department measurement. In high turnover organizations, lowering cost per student can be used as an effectiveness measurement. Cost of training could also relate directly back to retention - if you're spending less on new hire training, your retention may be higher. Work with your stakeholders and the HR department to determine training costs and where you want those numbers to be.

Seven: Return on Investment. ROI has long been a "catch all" metric. In some cases, it's easy to define ROI, but in more cases it's increasingly difficult. If you deliver soft skills training, it's hard to put a dollar figure on the return. There are numerous ROI calculations available, so if you're thinking about using an ROI metric, look for the formulas and plug in what you can. If you are part of a numbers-driven organization, you'll be able to make friends with the stakeholders by defining and measuring concrete ROI.

Eight: Revenue generation. This metric appears most likely as a combination of sales numbers, operational efficiency, and customer service. If an organization shows increased revenue, a solid training program can be part of that increase. If your organization is rolling out a new revenue generator, such as a product or service, that is generally the best time to use revenue generation as training metric.

Nine: Instructor performance. Instructor evaluation is an important internal measurement. The results can come from student and manager evaluations, and must take into account the instructor's presentation skills, knowledge of the subject, projection of organizational values, and adherence to instructional guidelines. The good part about instructor performance as a metric is that it can also be used as an external measure. When training is under discussion, training managers should be the first to praise their instructors for delivering quality instruction in every course - and instructor evaluations provide the supporting evidence.

Ten: End-user satisfaction. Your audience can measure effectiveness quicker than anyone else, both immediately following training and after a given time period, such as 30 or 60 days. The immediate results, sometimes referred to as "smile sheets", can give you a picture of what happened in the classroom. The delayed results can tell you if the material is useful or not. Plus, end-user surveys are great tools for proving effectiveness with management.

Remember that training metrics may take time to put into place and show results. It's also important to obtain buy-in from your stakeholders while you're determining how to measure results. Use these metrics to start with - and use them whenever you're developing or revamping training programs. Once you can prove bottom-line effectiveness, your credibility will go a long way.

Electronic Repair - Is It A Dying Trade Business?

Many times I received the same questions from my students and friends asking whether electronic repair service line is a dying trade. My answer to them was it depends on how you treat your electronic repair business. In other words, how do they run their electronic repair business. I do know that at current situation many consumers prefer to buy a new set rather than repair because electronic equipment is getting cheaper and cheaper. This is only true for certain types of equipment but not all equipment!

Let me ask you some questions, would you buy a new LCD TV set if your LCD TV have a sound problem? Would you buy a new Monitor if there is a color problem? Would you buy a new LaserJet printer just because of paper jam? Or would you buy a new dot-matrix printer just because of alignment out? If you talks about the cheaper range of equipment such as a VCD or even a DVD (none branded), yes the users might just throw it off to the rubbish bin and get a new unit with a one year warranty-free of troubles and hassle sending the machine to a repair shop. If the equipment cost several hundreds or thousands of dollars, definitely the users have to send it for repair unless the users are very rich. Base on the current economic situation, many users are willing to send their machine or equipment to repair compare to buying a new unit unless the equipment is beyond repair such as no spare parts, lightning strike and etc.

I would like to share a true story with you. Few years back, my sister bought a cheap none branded 21"TV which was half of the branded TV price. After two weeks, the TV front panel press button broken, not only that, the remote control not working as well. Due to these problems, she can't adjust or change the TV setting. I tried to repair it but inside everything was so fragile. The quality of the picture produced was so dull and lack of contrast. Since from that experienced, I've learned my lesson and would not buy any none branded equipment in the future.

Electronic Repair - Is It A Dying Trade Business?

The new 32" LCD TV set that I bought few months back was a LG brand. Although there are some cheaper none branded LCD TV (cheaper by RM1000.00), I don't buy it because I know the quality is far less superior than the branded one. The reason I told you this story is time will tell when the behavior of buyers change. That's mean, consumers is getting smarter and may reject something that would not last long and low in quality. Would you buy a new TV and expect it to run for a year and then replace it with another one? I don't think so because the amount of money you spent on buying a TV is to expect it to last as long as it could and give you the satisfaction in term of quality wise, am I right?

If majority of the consumers are turning back to the branded equipment and don't mind spending a little bit more, in the long run, it would benefit us as an electronic repairer. Why? Because we would be getting more things to repair (consumers never scrap off their equipment) and the profit margin is higher.

Now, assuming the customers send the faulty equipment for you to repair, how fast can you repair it and how good is your communication (people skills) with your customers (either end users or dealers) would really affect your business. Even if you are the best electronic repairer in the world and don't know how to communicate or talk to your customer, your repair business may end up losing to your competitors. In today's competitive business environment, you need to build a strong relationship with your customers more than ever before. I understand that most of us as an electronic repairer that like technical stuff have some difficulty in facing with customers (communication). The way we convince our customers is not as good as those born with natural gift (like a good salesman) that they can easily treat any customers like their friends. I'm not here to ask you to compare with them but we have the choice of improving ourselves. Many of us like to dwell in our comfortable place (technical department) and concentrating doing our repair job and at the same time ignoring what happen to the surrounding (including of entertaining your customers) am I right? My friends, if there are no sales and no customers; there would be nothing for us to repair. Without sales, there would be no activity in your company!

I've met up some of my repair friends who had given up their electronic repair service business and find other jobs due to the strong competition in this repair field. When I asked them why do you want to quit your repair business? The answer that I got from them was less things for them to repair nowadays and the income can't sustain their daily spending. I asked them again, did you go to search for new customers such as faxing, visiting electronic or computer shops, distributing flyers and etc. The answer that I got really surprised me and you. It is no! You see, as mentioned above, if there are no sales coming in, your repair company will surely have to close down. Not only that, most of them do not have the people's skill to convince their customers. Sales won't come in into your doorstep on its own unless it is recommended by your friends or customers. Why those big corporate engage lots of salesman? Because no sales means no business!

I admit that I once have lack of people skills too but this would not stop me from improving myself. The best book that had changed my way of thinking and approaching customers and teaches you on how to start a conversation was "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. The information inside I had absorbed and now I have the courage and confident when meeting new clients and customers. Besides this book I read other books as well like "The Millionaire Mindset" by Gerry Robert, "Rich Dad Poor Dad" by Robert T Kiyosaki, "Who Moved My Cheese" by Dr Spencer Johnson and many more. Those books really changed my mindset and thinking and you can use their ideas and apply it into your repair business. Please don't just read technical books only, open up your mind and start reading books that can improve your life, business, sales and etc.

I have a friend who is a millionaire and currently making thousands of dollars everyday told me that whenever he goes to work everyday he must learn new things or otherwise he's actually not working! Wow! That was a powerful quote by him and his word really sparked and motivates me to improve myself everyday. One cannot be stagnant for the rest of their life otherwise even if after 10 to 20 years your life would be the same. One should always learn and improve themselves to excel in their life. Don't wait for things to happen, you make things to happen! This friend of mine actually went broke 15 years ago and now if he choose not to work the money still keep pouring into his bank account. He never show any sign of giving up during that time of difficulty. Winner never quit!

Charge your customers with reasonable price, build a good relationship with your clients or customers, do not cheat, work hard and smart, improving yourself and learn how to get sales and with the perseverance in you , I don't see why a person can fail in his electronic repair business. At this moment, my company still has lots of customers sending faulty Monitors and Printers for us to repair and lately LCD Monitor repair is a blessing to us because we can charge a higher price.

Lastly, if you serve your customers satisfactorily, you will soon have a large base of loyal customers who will promote your organization or company, making you feel satisfied, happy and most importantly making profit which is your ultimate aim in setting up an electronic repair service business. It is now your choice whether you wish to change and improve yourself or to remain where you are because 'Success is a Choice'.

Car Brand Reliability Rankings 2011 - Consumer Reports' Top 10

Consumer Reports' recently announced its 2011 reliability ranking of car brands. By predicted short-term reliability, CR's top 10 brands for model year 2011 are, in descending order:

Scion
Porsche
Acura
Honda
Infiniti
Toyota
Subaru
Volvo
Lexus
Ford.

Toyota Motor Corporation's three car lines - Scion, Toyota, and Lexus - and Honda Motor Company's Acura and Honda have consistently placed within top 10 lists for short-term, mid-term, and longer term reliability. Nissan's Infiniti line is often among this very select group as well.

Car Brand Reliability Rankings 2011 - Consumer Reports' Top 10

With regard to best cars, the Scion xD, a small hatchback, is the Scion line's highest ranked model, the Toyota Yaris, a small sedan or hatchback, is the Toyota brand's highest ranked model, and the Lexus LX, a large luxury SUV, is Lexus' best. The Scion xD has a 2010 Auto Reliability Grade Point Average for the first 4 years of a perfect 4.00, as does the Yaris hatchback. The first 4-year 2010 Auto Reliability GPA of the Lexus LX is 3.67.

Acura's best is the Acura RL, a sedan, and Honda's best is the Honda CR-V, a small SUV. Infiniti's best is the all-wheel-drive Infiniti G sedan. The first 4-year Auto Reliability GPA of the CR-V is 3.75; the RL and G sedan have more modest GPAs.

Porsche's ranking by CR's predicted short-term reliability took a jump, from 9th place for the 2010 model year to 2nd place for the 2011 model year. However, its highest rated model for 2011 was its lowest rated model for 2010, suggesting that the data for this car marque may be too thin to give stable results.

Volvo's ranking also took a sizable leap - from 18th place to 8th place - as did Ford's - from 16th place to 10th place. Both indicate that Ford Motor Company has been quite earnest about improving quality.

Outside the top 10, both the Hyundai line, 11th place, and the Kia line, 13th place, outranked all of the lines of General Motors Corporation and Chrysler LLC, as they did last year as well. By CR's Rank Change from Last Year, GM's Chevrolet line rose 3 as its Buick line fell 3.

Consumer Reports' predicted reliability for a car brand is based on the reliability performance of the brand's models within the 3 most recent model years. A model's reliability is a measure of the model's infrequency of reported serious problems.

CR's reliability rankings are closely followed by many as they are based on an infrequency of serious problems, rather than complaints that may be on rather trivial matters.
